Connection Scope and Overrides

Understand when a connection should be global, project-scoped, or explicitly excluded for one repo.

Connections in Mogplex are not just account-wide settings.

They resolve at two levels:

  • Global connections are available everywhere by default.
  • Project connections only exist for one repo.

On top of that, a repo can explicitly exclude a global connection without deleting it for the rest of the account.

That split is what lets one repo use a tightly scoped toolset without forcing the same choice on every other repo you work on.

Where each connection surface lives

Use Settings when you want to:

  • connect a provider for the first time
  • run the initial health check
  • manage account-wide REST or MCP defaults
  • reconnect OAuth-backed integrations

Use the repo-aware Connections pane inside a workspace when you want to:

  • add a connection only for the active repo
  • see the resolved connection set for that repo
  • exclude one global connection from that repo
  • confirm the repo-specific MCP count after overrides are applied

The practical rule is:

configure the integration in Settings first when you are onboarding it, then switch to the repo context only if one project should behave differently.

How resolution works inside a repo

When Mogplex resolves runnable connections for a repo, it effectively applies this sequence:

  1. start with enabled global connections
  2. remove any global connections this repo has explicitly excluded
  3. add enabled project-scoped connections that belong to the repo

That resolved set is what the active repo can actually use.

This matters most for MCP servers. The MCP limit is enforced against the resolved runnable set for that repo, not just the raw account-wide list.

So if one repo is already dense with project MCPs, excluding a noisy global MCP can be the difference between a clean tool surface and an overstuffed one.

Choose Global vs Project on purpose

Choose Global when:

  • the same integration should be available to most repos
  • the credential or base URL is shared account-wide
  • you want one place to reconnect or disable the integration

Choose Project when:

  • only one repo should see that tool
  • one repo needs different credentials or a different endpoint
  • you are testing a tool without exposing it everywhere
  • the connection only makes sense for one codebase or environment

Use an exclusion override when:

  • the connection is still useful globally
  • one repo should not see it
  • you do not want to fork or duplicate the connection just to remove it from one place

Common examples

One shared MCP for most repos

If you use one Sentry or Linear connection almost everywhere, keep it global.

Then only exclude it in the repo where it would be distracting, wrong, or unsafe.

One repo talks to a different environment

If one repo must call a staging-only REST API or a different MCP endpoint, create that connection as Project scope from the active repo context.

That keeps the alternate credential or base URL from leaking into unrelated repos.

One repo should not inherit a noisy shared tool

If you have a global MCP connection but a particular repo should stay lean, exclude the global connection there instead of deleting it everywhere.

Healthy operating sequence

  1. Add or reconnect the integration in Settings.
  2. Test it there until the connection itself is healthy.
  3. Open the target repo workspace.
  4. Decide whether the repo should inherit the global connection, exclude it, or add a repo-only one.
  5. Re-check the repo-scoped connection list before debugging prompts or routing.

That order matters because connection-health problems and scope problems are not the same bug.

What usually confuses people

  • A connection can be healthy in Settings and still be intentionally absent in one repo because that repo excluded it.
  • A project-scoped connection is not broken if it does not appear in other repos. That is the point.
  • Seeing a global connection in the account list does not mean it is part of the resolved runnable set for every repo.
